Brucella canis, is an emerging public health risk due to the increase in importation of dogs particularly from Eastern European countries. Whilst the human risk is deemed low, the consequences of contracting the disease can be serious.
If you have imported a dog we will ask you where they came from and when they arrived in the UK.
To best protect our clients, staff, and your pet, we advise that a brucellosis blood test is undertaken for all dogs originally from Europe. This includes dogs that have already been in the UK for several years.
Testing is not compulsory. However, we will not offer ‘non-urgent’ surgery on your pet such as neutering and will wear ‘Personal protective equipment’ (PPE) during consultations until a negative blood test result is received. There is an additional cost for PPE.
Unfortunately, as we have no data about the reliability of the tests used in other countries, we are unable to accept these as proof of your dog’s Brucellosis status.
